2nd Time - Same Experience September 1, 2010 J. Lapeze (So. California) This is the 2nd one of these that we purchased, thinking that it was a fluke that the 1st one died after 2 years. Nope - this one is just about 2 years old and after working fine yesterday morning, I came home to a completely dead microwave last night. I love the style, design - and give it two stars only because the performance of the unit, when it works, is fantastic. This little microwave really packs a lot of power, it fits nicely under my cabinet and has a sleek, modern design. I love the Turbo Defrost feature, and the quick minute timer. But after owning two of the same model, I will not be buying this model again. Hubby and I are wondering if there is a computer chip embedded in there somewhere that shuts this brand down after 2+ years! From the looks of the other reviews both her and on Target's website - this is a common issue.
Design and power overcome minor flaws July 24, 2010 Vicki (Connecticut, United States) Our previous Panasonic (NN-H504WF) died after 5 years of good service and we were looking to replace it with something similar. We were looking for stainless steel or black to complement our other appliances, but it was hard to find something that met our size and wattage requirements that also had some style- or at least wasn't UGLY. There are tons of GE models out there, but the reviews generally stink, plus my husband's personal experience with GE is that they no longer make good products.
We found this one online and it looked pretty good, but we were a bit hesitant due to some of the negative reviews. We actually went to a Target store to purchase it, in case we had to return it. I'm happy to say we won't need to do that- this microwave is perfect for us. It's compact, has a higher wattage for the size than almost any other model we've seen, and is very attractive. The comment someone made about only the front panel being true stainless is true, but that doesn't detract at all from the appearance.
And, it cooks well! Our previous Panasonic was 1200 watts but we think it may have deteriorated near the end- this one definitely cooks faster, but still evenly. The features are actually almost identical to our previous model, as are the flaws- like the fact that you have to press the Power button multiple times to get the level you want, then enter the time, and the fact that the light doesn't come on when you open the door. But we are used to those and it doesn't bother us. The display issue is a slight annoyance- we can easily read the time from anywhere in the kitchen, but when you are standing right next to the unit you have to step back or bend down to see the numbers. Fortunately, our short term memory is generally good enough to remember the numbers we just entered on the panel when we want to cook something, so it really isn't a big issue.
Overall the oven is everything we need, and we are more than willing to overlook its minor flaws. It seems that microwaves these days are not meant to last like they used to, so we'll see how much longevity we get out of it. The 5 years we got out of the last one was reasonable, in my opinion, and we've had good experiences with other Panasonic products, so we figured this would be a good bet.
Works Fine but.... July 20, 2010 Rigwdstk (Woodstock, NY USA) The unit is identical to the one replaced but manufactured 4/2010. The only criticism is the recessed buttons do not always take action. You have to hunt for that button within the area and depress firmly.
Loved it until it started to die! July 16, 2010 Chelsea Liddle (USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
We loved this microwave for about 4 years until it started making strange buzzing/hissing sounds about 50% of the time while not in use, and it started malfunctioning randomly. For example, we would set the timer for 30 seconds and in the middle of heating it would change to 2:00. Strange! True it wasn't an ubber-expensive microwave, but I expected a longer lifespan. Now we continue to use it, but keep it mostly unplugged (inconvenient!) because of the crazy noises and possible safety issues.
Other than the above situation, and as far as normal usage goes, I think it's a great machine and functions pretty seamlessly and easily. The power levels work great, it has the standard rotating tray that helps to warm or defrost evenly. I used it extensively for defrosting and it did a nice, quick job. I actually really liked the push-button open feature (versus a handle) because my young kids could absolutely not figure out how to open the microwave, so I felt it was a good safety feature. It's very attractive, feels durable, the inside is large, the exterior never scratched or chipped and it is really easy to keep looking nice with an occasional wipe down along the front and inside. I wish Panasonic would make it a long-lasting appliance because I would have kept it forever. Unfortunately, as it stands now, I'm looking to replace it soon.
They don't make them like they used to July 15, 2010 J. Kramien (portland, or) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased this Panasonic microwave because it appeared to be identical to one I had owned for 9 years. Appearance, yes....quality NO!. The compartment lite only comes on when the oven is running, the display can not be read at an angle, the keypad is sticky and the materials are cheaper and lighter than the original model I owned.
